Harpoon

Moonlight drapes the garden with a lullaby
cold as a harpoon. It knows its target,
the heart. Later, the helpless, useful thing
will dive and flail, ribcage the staves
of a boat. We know this story, we know
this song. But it’s got a rope on it.
It flies back.

Kathleen Kirk is the author of six poetry chapbooks, most recently ABCs of Women’s Work (Red Bird, 2015). Her work has appeared previously in Sweet and in a variety of other print and online journals, including Arsenic Lobster, Menacing Hedge, Eclectica, The Fourth River, and Poetry East. She is the poetry editor for Escape Into Life, and she blogs at Wait! I Have a Blog?! Recently, thanks to a new oven, she resumed baking chocolate oat bars, which contain lots of semi-sweet morsels and sweetened condensed milk. And oats, which of course transform this dessert into a healthy breakfast.
